Petroleum-based plastics havebeen thematerials of choice for themanufacture ofgreenhouse crop containers.However,the extensive use ofplastic containers has also resultedin a significant waste disposal problem for thegreenhouse industry. The use of biocontainers such asSadepots and MaterBi® trays is a strategy that could reduce the amount of waste plasticgenerated by greenhouse operations. In this research Sadepots trayswere evaluated for production of eggplant and MaterBi®trays forproduction of cauliflower,broccoli and escarole. It was observed that plants grown inSadepots trays were smaller than thosegrown in traditionalpolystyrene tray; further Sadepots trays caused an higher rate ofwater loss in the substrate thanplastic ones. Plants produced in MaterBi® trays , on average, exhibited similar growth characteristics as plants grown in to polystyrene container,with a slight increase in the rate of growth of plantlets.
