A national regulation issued in November 2003 represents the basis of monitoring programs yearly organized in Italy in order to check the possible adventitious presence of GMOs in seeds. Several public Institutes (CRA-SCS, Fraud Repression Inspectorate, Customs Agency, Phytosanitary Regional Services) are in charge of sampling the seed lots and analyze the samples in the aim to verify the absence of GM seeds in the conventional maize and soybean seed lots intended for the national market. The paper presents an overview of the results of ten years: as a total, more than 16000 samples of maize and more than 3000 sample of soybean seed lots have been sampled and analyzed. Testing results are discussed, with reference to the country of origin of the seed, quantification and identification of the GM event/s, and the content of research projects carried out at the same time of the official control programs.
