The recent decisions of energy and agricultural policy of the EU, and the reasons behind the promotion of renewable energy are here discussed, with special emphasis on lignocellulosic energy crops. Regarding the prospects, and notably the economic income for the farmers, are highlighted the environmental conditions (drought conditions during the springsummer growing season) and structural conditions (restricted land area available for bioenergy, small and fragmented land areas within the farms) of the Italian territory. Thus, in the current situation it is unlikely that the stakeholders could achieve satisfactory income if their role is limited to the production of biomass. Hence, we suggest that the farmers could take advantage by converting themselves the biomass into useful energy, then selling the energy on the market. Moreover, the main suitable energetic destination of the lignocellulosic biomass are discussed. Finally, the most promising species for producing bioenergy in Italian pedoclimatic conditions are presented, highlighting for each of the species the points of strength and the critical points.
