The Fruit Research Unit of Forlì of the Agricultural Research Council (CRA-FRF) has recently carried out a programme of recovering and characterization of the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) germplasm traditional of Romagna territory (Southern Po Valley area), to preserve from erosion its interesting agronomic traits, as well as its cultural value. Twenty-two accessions were screened with 15 microsatellite SSR together with eight reference accessions, chosen by the Prunus Working Group of the European Cooperative Programme for Genetic Resources (ECPGR) to standardize allele scoring and allow easier comparison among molecular datasets of various cherry collections. The high observed heterozygosity of this germplasm is indicative of its potential genetic richness and benefits to future breeding programs.
